…a talented, skilled, and — above all — patient teacher.
Andy LeGrand is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, where he began music lessons as a child, primarily focusing on vocal skills. At the age of thirteen, he began learning guitar and began performing professionally at the age of sixteen. He completed high school at the Cobb County Center for Excellence in Performing Arts in Atlanta. After serving in the United States Navy, Andy simultaneously earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Studies from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). During his university years, Andy studied with several excellent jazz and classical guitar instructors, including Patrick Kerber and Hank Mackie of Southeastern Louisiana University, and Phil Weaver of UAH.
Andy LeGrand began songwriting at the age of thirteen. He has composed and arranged many pieces for solo guitar, guitar and cello, guitar and flute, and vocal and instrument ensembles. He focuses largely on writing new music. He directs and is a performing member of the mixed instrument ensemble Armonía. He instructs at LeGrand Music Studios in the Fountain City area of Knoxville, which operates inside of the Fountain City Art Center. Andy has founded several online music services including the web service organizations FlintMeryl.com, and FlintMerylMusic.com, a digital sheet music distributor.
Andy can trace the lineage of his guitar instruction back five generations through Patrick Kerber, Pepe Romero, Celedonio Romero (1913-1996) and Daniel Fortea (1878-1953) to Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909), a virtuoso and a prolific composer and arranger for the guitar. While formal training influenced his compositions and technique, Andy skillfully weaves in and out of genres while composing, and offers a non-traditional presentation of the nylon string guitar during performances. In 2004, Andy began a small private studio which has grown into LeGrand Music Studios, a music school with many instructors, who teach and perform while offering diverse instrumentation. Under his instruction, students learn to read music, perform and compose. His teaching extends to the World Wide Web via Skype and FaceTime.
Andy is a supporting member and is a board representative of the Knoxville Guitar Society.
